Creatine has a reputation for being a supplement reserved for bodybuilders and serious athletes. But it is actually one of the most extensively studied compounds in sports nutrition and increasingly, in healthy ageing.

The interesting part? Your body already makes it.

So why do millions of people supplement it?

The answer has less to do with deficiency and more to do with how much creatine your body stores.

What is creatine?

Creatine is a naturally occurring compound made from three amino acids: arginine, glycine and methionine.

Your body produces roughly 1–2 grams per day, primarily in the liver and kidneys, and you also obtain some from foods such as meat and fish.

Around 95% of the body's creatine is stored in skeletal muscle, with smaller amounts found in tissues including the brain and heart.

Its main role is closely connected to energy.

Your cells constantly use a molecule called ATP as their immediate energy source. When energy demand suddenly rises—during a heavy lift, sprint or other intense effort—creatine helps rapidly regenerate ATP.
