But here's the problem: "tested" can mean many different things. And in many cases, it tells you very little about whether a supplement will actually work once it's inside your body.

What does "tested" actually mean?
There isn't a single definition.
A supplement may have undergone several different types of testing, each answering a completely different question.
Some tests evaluate quality.
Others evaluate stability.
Others investigate how a product behaves in the laboratory.
Only a small number attempt to answer the question consumers actually care about:
Does the body absorb it?
1. Identity, purity and potency testing
These are the foundation of supplement quality control.
Identity testing confirms that the ingredient listed on the label is actually present in the product.
Purity testing looks for unwanted contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, residual solvents or microbial contamination.
Potency testing verifies that the amount of the active ingredient matches what's written on the label.
These tests are essential.
Without them, it's impossible to know whether a supplement is safe or accurately formulated.
But they don't answer an equally important question:

2. Dissolution testing
Dissolution testing measures how quickly a tablet or capsule breaks apart under laboratory conditions designed to simulate the digestive tract.
If a supplement doesn't dissolve properly, absorption may be limited.
However, passing a dissolution test doesn't guarantee that the active ingredient will ultimately reach your bloodstream.
It simply confirms that the dosage form releases its contents under controlled conditions.
3. In vitro testing
"In vitro" literally means "in glass."
These experiments are performed in laboratories using cells, enzymes or simulated digestive systems.
They help researchers understand how ingredients behave before moving to human studies.
For example, an ingredient may appear highly absorbable in a laboratory model.
But the human digestive system is far more complex.
Results obtained in vitro don't always predict what happens in real life.
4. Animal studies
Animal studies are an important step in biomedical research.
They allow scientists to investigate mechanisms, safety and biological effects before testing compounds in humans.
Many promising supplement ingredients begin here.
However, animals metabolize nutrients differently from humans.
A result observed in mice or rats cannot automatically be assumed to occur in people.
Animal research generates hypotheses.
Human research confirms them.
The question that matters most
When buying a supplement, the question isn't simply:
"Has it been tested?"
It's:
"Has it been shown to reach the bloodstream in humans, at meaningful levels?"
This is where bioavailability becomes important.
Bioavailability refers to the proportion of a nutrient or compound that is absorbed and becomes available for the body to use.
Two supplements can contain exactly the same ingredient, at exactly the same dose, yet deliver very different amounts into circulation depending on their formulation.
The gap between quality and performance
This is where many consumers become confused.
A supplement can be:
- Pure.
- Free from contaminants.
- Correctly dosed.
- Manufactured to high standards.
And still perform poorly if the active ingredient isn't effectively absorbed.
Quality testing tells you what is inside the bottle.
It doesn't necessarily tell you how much your body will actually use.
These are two different questions.
What should you look for?
Before trusting a marketing claim, ask yourself:
- What type of testing is being referenced?
- Is the evidence based on laboratory experiments or human clinical studies?
- Has absorption (bioavailability) actually been measured?
- Does the formulation have published human data to support its performance?
These questions go beyond marketing and help distinguish quality claims from meaningful scientific evidence.
The takeaway
"Tested" is an important word.
But on its own, it doesn't tell the whole story.
The most trustworthy supplements combine rigorous quality control with evidence that their ingredients are absorbed and available for the body to use.
